Position Description:

The Department of Anthropology at the University of Iowa invites applications for an Instructional Track Faculty position in Cultural Anthropology (open rank) beginning August 2026. This is an instructional-track faculty position; the track does not include the possibility of tenure, but otherwise parallels the tenure track with various ranks (Assistant Professor of Instruction, Associate Professor of Instruction, Professor of Instruction). The position is renewable in one-year increments for the first three years, and renewable thereafter in three- or five-year increments (depending on rank). An Instructional Track Faculty Member participates in departmental governance with voting rights and is expected to contribute to the culture of teaching excellence in the department and the university.

Applications are sought from candidates who have: 1) a commitment to engaged student learning in undergraduate anthropology education, including the use of inclusive, evidence-based instructional practices; 2) experience teaching introductory cultural and/or applied anthropology lecture courses; 3) a willingness and experience to collaborate with faculty, staff, and students to reform and sustain aspects of the undergraduate anthropology curriculum; and 4) excellent communication, organization, and leadership skills.

The Instructional Track Faculty Member will largely contribute to instruction in introductory cultural anthropology courses. In addition to teaching lecture portions of courses, instructional track faculty also supervise graduate teaching assistants assigned to these classes, develop new curricula, and engage in other professional activities and services. The department has a history of strong collaboration with campus partners such as the Center for Teaching, the Office of Teaching, Learning, and Technology, and the Office of Academic Success and Retention to support the incorporation of research-supported instructional practices such as learning assistants and the development of tools such as the Elements of Success dashboard.

To apply, submit your application online at http://jobs.uiowa.edu/. Refer to requisition 75738. Only complete applications will be reviewed. Complete applications include the following:

  • A cover letter that briefly explains the candidate’s interest in the position and specifically addresses how the candidate has met the qualifications.

  • A curriculum vitae

  • A statement of teaching experience and philosophy

The deadline for full consideration is 11/14/2025. Screening of applications will begin after this date.
