Job Description

We are seeking an Assistant General Manager to help lead the daily operations of a growing equipment rental and vehicle outfitting business. This is a key leadership role for someone who brings a balanced mix of operational discipline, people leadership, technical ability, and customer focus. You will support and guide a team of 10+ across several departments, working directly with the General Manager to ensure smooth operations, strong service delivery, and continuous improvement. This is a highly hands-on role, ideal for someone who leads from the floor, not from behind a desk.

Assistant General Manager

Location: Portland, Maine

Job Type: Full-time, On-site

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead daily operations across the shop, yard, counter, and delivery teams
  • Provide leadership, coaching, and consistent feedback to staff at all experience levels
  • Maintain alignment of schedules, priorities, and resources without micromanaging
  • Support newer leaders on the team with mentorship and structure
  • Monitor and manage customer interactions, scheduling, and estimates
  • Use internal systems effectively, including Google Forms and process documentation tools
  • Drive clarity, accountability, and structure throughout day-to-day operations
  • Identify and implement practical improvements while upholding service standards
  • Collaborate closely with the General Manager on planning, staffing, and business strategy

Schedule

  • Monday to Friday, 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM
  • Saturdays, 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM

Ideal Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate is someone who brings strong leadership presence, business awareness, and the ability to balance customer service with operational efficiency. You should be comfortable in a dynamic environment, guiding a diverse team, and making sound decisions quickly.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 5 years of management experience leading teams of 8 or more in a service, operations, retail, construction, or production environment
  • Proven ability to motivate and develop staff while holding them accountable
  • Strong computer skills and comfort using digital systems, forms, and documentation tools
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to create clarity and direction
  • Strong organizational habits and attention to detail
  • Process-driven mindset with ability to juggle multiple priorities
  • Understanding of P&L and basic business operations
  • Customer service experience in a non-desk, hands-on environment
  • Ability to work with professionalism and maturity while supporting a growing team

Compensation

  • Salary range: $60,000 to $75,000 annually (based on experience)
  • Direct hire, full-time, salaried position
